The following course descriptions outline the content of two courses taught at Brooklyn College.

Female and Male: Sociology of Gender

The readings offer students a wide variety of ideas, many of them quite provocative, about how gender structures our feelings and expectations of ourselves and others, the "choices" we make, and the opportunities available to us. We will discuss gender and work, socialization, education, sexuality, reproductive technology, politics, law, and violence. In order to monitor the changes in your thinking about these issues I will ask you to write a two-page essay on the first day of class entitled "My Life as a Woman (or Man)." On the last day of class you will hand in a revised version of the essay (8-10 pages) that includes references to class readings and discussions.

People, Power and Politics

Drawn from a variety of intellectual traditions and historical contexts, the readings in People, Power and Politics, 10th edition are meant to encourage critical reflections upon the American experience. Linking the development of the American state to hierarchies of race, class, and gender, this course helps students understand changing definitions of "We, the People..." The course focuses on the tensions between American ideals of equality and the reality of inequality; majority rule and minority rights; and pluralism and American identity. In order to link these issues to contemporary events, students subscribe to The New York Times and write a series of short essays summarizing NYT articles and connecting them to class readings.
